Little Tokyo FunFest, May 17-18

    On Saturday and Sunday, May 17-18, 2008, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., the Japanese American Cultural and Community Center in Los Angeles presents Little Tokyo FunFest, a fun-filled weekend of family-friendly activities.

 

   The festival takes place during this annual children’s day celebration of Japanese tradition and the cultural diversity of Los Angeles.

 

    As part of this weekend filled with Nikkei Community day on May 17, Chibi-K Kids for Kids Run on May 18, youth basketball tournaments on May 17, and Cultural Discovery Workshop on May 18, is the Asian Pacific Arts & Crafts Faire on May 17 and 18, offering delicious food, live entertainment and a gathering of local arts and crafts vendors.

 

   Visitors will be treated to traditional and contemporary Japanese inspired hand-crafted objects, clothing, and jewelry. The annual faire will also feature cultural performances and workshops such as taiko-drumming, dancing, manju-making and Japanese calligraphy workshops for the entire family.

 

Nikkei Community Day

   Saturday, May 17 is designated as the Second Annual Nikkei (Japanese American) Community Day, and the event will be held in Little Tokyo’s JACCC Plaza from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

   Community leaders and interested individuals from both the English-speaking and Japanese-speaking sectors will kick off the day with a symposium on “The State and Future of the Nikkei Community.”

  Community groups will share information, provide games, display crafts, and sell food at booths throughout day. Community people will display their unique culture talents by performing on stage.

   Community advocates will speak at a health forum on topics to increase awareness of health issues of concern to the Nikkei community.

   The Nikkei Community Day is sponsored by Ties That Bind in conjunction with the Nikkei Federation, Little Tokyo Service Center, Japanese American Cultural and Community Center, Japanese American Citizens League and Little Tokyo Recreation Center.

Cultural Discovery Workshop

    On Sunday, May 18, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., in Japanese American Cultural and Community Center, Cultural Discovery Workshop will be led by local artists and professional. Hands-on workshop are unique opportunity for parents and children to experience a variety of cultural traditions all in one day.
