Hula dance
Gardena Valley Japanese Cultural Institute presents the annual carnival on Saturday, June 23, noon to 9 p.m. and Sunday, June 24, noon to 7:30 p.m. at 1964 West 162nd Street, Gardena, CA 90247. The programs are following:
Performances—Outdoor stage entertainment will be from noon to 6 p.m. on both days. The program will showcase the many classes and programs held at the community center: singing, taiko, shamisen, tai chi, hula, ukulele, line dancing; as well as, guest performers featuring Okinawan drum and dance, Japanese dance, youth community bands and more.
Martial arts demonstrations—Indoor demonstrations will be held each day featuring the martial arts classes held at the cultural institute: shotokan karate, naginata, judo, kendo, shorinji kempo.
Cultural Arts—Japanese Language School students’ works, ikebana flower arrangement, watercolor art and crafts, and children’s art will be displayed in the upstairs classrooms. Come and visit the origami hands-on activities creating fun and innovative shapes by folding paper.
Presale-Carnival Coupon Books—Being sold by the institute supporting organizations and at the institute office for $10 per book prior to the Carnival. The ten $1.00 coupons can be used at all carnival booths, as well as raffle drawings eligibility.
